Arsenal FC goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has signed a new long-term contract with the London club.
The 23-year-old joined Arsenal’s youth setup back in 2006 from Legia Warsaw’s academy. He made his first team debut in the 2009-10 season in a League Cup match, but had to spend a loan spell at Brentford. The Polish international became a first team regular in the 2011-12 season. Szczesny faced a lot of criticism for his performances last season, and he even lost his place in the side for a while. But he finished the 2012-13 season strongly and has continued his good form this season.
Szczesny has kept three clean sheets in 11 league matches so far this season, but there has been a significant improvement in his performances. He produced a man of the match performance against Marseille in the Champions League and followed that up with important saves against Crystal Palace and Liverpool. Arsenal have signed Emiliano Viviano at the start of this season and Fabianski is still in the ranks, but Szczesny has pinned down his place as the no.1.
Arsenal have now confirmed that Szczesny has signed a new long-term contract at the club. Szczesny has expressed his delight at tying down his future at the club and has thanked everyone for the support.
“I am very pleased to have signed a new contract. Arsenal is like my family and I’m so happy to be committing my long-term future here.
“I’ve been at this club for over seven years now and I’d just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support towards me during my time here.
“Many people have given me amazing support since I arrived as a boy, people like Tony Roberts, who helped my development as a player from a young age. I’m so proud to be an Arsenal player and am looking forward to helping our Club towards success in the years to come.” – The Arsenal custodian said.
Arsene Wenger was delighted at this development and hoped that he can continue his development at the club.
“We’re very pleased Wojciech has signed a new long-term contract. I have always believed he is an extremely talented player, with excellent reflexes and good mental strength. He continues to grow and improve all the time too, so he has the potential to be even better. He can be an important part of Arsenal Football Club for many years to come.” – Arsene Wenger said.
