Arsenal host Liverpool in what is one of the most highly anticipated matches of this season so far. Both the clubs have made a fine start to their League campaign and this match will provide a better perspective of their ability to sustain this title challenge. Arsenal are in a crucial part of their season where they will face the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United along with Liverpool in their next three fixtures. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Chelsea in their last game and would look to bounce back in this game after winning just two of their last five matches in all competitions.
Arsene Wenger is confident that his side can get through this difficult round of matches unscathed, but knows that this will test his side’s strength and character.
“It is an important period of course, but I’m quite confident and you can see I’m quite relaxed because I have the complete confidence that we will deal well with it.
“I take it as an opportunity to show our strengths and I am completely sure that the players will be up for it and take this opportunity.
“In the kind of games that we play [against Liverpool], you always find out a lot about your squad. I don’t need to find out too much because we are a very stable team who, since January 1, has taken more points than anybody else.
“I learnt a lot about my team through the spring period when we had our backs to the wall and had to win every single game. I know how strong these guys are and how much they want it.” – The Arsenal manager said.
Arsenal were involved in a much talked about transfer battle with Liverpool over Luis Suarez in the summer. The Gunners failed with their attempt to sign the Uruguayan international, but Arsene Wenger refused to comment on that saga, instead he praised Olivier Giroud, who has been in fine form this season. Wenger also pointed out how Giroud and Suarez are different to each other in their style of play.
“I’m not focused on that [Suarez transfer saga] now, what is important for me is that Giroud has proven since the start of the season that he’s an exceptional striker.
“They have different styles, [they are] different styles of players. Giroud is a real centre forward who uses that space well, uses his power and is really central. Suarez is more a player who goes on the flanks, who comes deep into midfield and is more of a dribbler.” – he added.
Arsenal Team News
Arsene Wenger revealed that although Arteta will be back for this clash after serving out his suspension, Gnabry will remain at the side-lines along with other long term injury concerns.
“Basically we have just Arteta back because he was suspended. Gnabry, who was not available for Tuesday, will not be available again, and all the other long-term injuries are not back – Walcott, Chamberlain, Podolski, Diaby.” – Wenger revealed.
Mathieu Flamini, who has made an instant impact on his return to the club, will miss out once again, but there is possibility of him being available for the Manchester United clash.
“He is a short-term injury, he could be available for Manchester United. He is out for Liverpool and Dortmund.” – he said.
