Arsenal FC have officially announced the signing of French U-21 international Yaya Sanogo.
Arsenal have announced their first signing of the summer, and although it is not one of the big names that the Gooners are waiting for, Yaya Sanogo is one of the brightest prospect to have come out of France recently and can possibly make a big impact at the club in the future.
Sanogo spent his youth career at clubs like Montrouge CF, which has produced talents like Ben Arfa and Les Ulis. This is the club where Arsenal legend Thierry Henry started his career as a kid. After signing for Auxerre as a 13-year-old kid, Yaya Sanogo delivered some outstanding performances in the youth tournaments in the 2006-07 season. In 14 matches that season, Sanogo scored 25 goals and provided 17 assists — people all of a sudden sat up and took notice of him.
The 20-year-old has been a subject of interest for a lot of clubs across Europe even before he was promoted to the senior side of the French club. Arsenal have been scouting him since 2007 and they were also joined by their arch rivals Tottenham. But Sanogo decided to continue his career in France and signed a professional contract with Auxerre, back in 2009.
He recovered from a fractured tibia in 2011, which kept him out of the game for six months and it was feared back then that he might never return the same footballer. But although his rehabilitation has taken longer than expected, he is now showing signs of being back to his best. Sanogo is currently participating in the U20 World Cup, where his wonderful performances in the opening three matches have helped them reach the knock-out stages of the competition.
Sanogo was on Arsene Wenger’s radar long before he joined Auxerre’s youth team. In fact Arsenal and Tottenham wanted to sign him back in 2009, but he chose stay in France. But Arsenal knocked at this door once again this summer and this time he took the decision to join the London club. The 20-year-old rejected a contract extension from Auxerre and has now joined the Gunners as a free agent. The signing was finally announced on Arsenal’s official Website today, although the deal was in place long time ago.
“Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that French youth international Yaya Sanogo has joined on a long-term contract.
“The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes, with Sanogo joining up with his new team-mates after his participation in the Under-20 World Cup.” – A statement on the website read.
Arsene Wenger has also expressed his delight at the arrival of the first new signing this summer and he hopes that the Frenchman can continue his development at the Emirates.
“Sanogo is a good young signing for us. He has shown that he has potential with his recent performances for Auxerre and also for the France Under-20 side. We are looking forward to Yaya joining us and continuing his promising development.” – The Arsenal manager was quoted in the press.
Arsenal have signed one the hottest prospects in France and the fact that he has arrived for free, makes this a bargain deal. Yaya Sanogo has tremendous physique: he is tall, strong on the ball, has excellent pace and even has a wonderful work rate. All in all, he has the attributes to become a top striker. He is not yet ready to make any substantial impact in the Arsenal first team, but with the likes of Chamakh, Bendtner and Arshavin leaving the Emirates permanently this summer, he might as well get his opportunity to shine.
