Arsenal are reportedly planning a raid in Bundesliga once again, with Andre Schurrle and Lewis Holtby in their sights.
Arsenal’s attack has struggled at times this season. While they did manage to score seven goals in the recently concluded match against Reading in the League cup with a second string eleven, their first team has struggled off late in the League and in Europe. Arsene Wenger is said to be in the market for another striker to give himself more options to call upon. Olivier Giroud and Chamakh are the only recognized senior strikers in the squad. While Giroud will need more time to settle down, Arsenal will need more goal scoring options at the top.
The English media reports that Arsenal have set their sights on Andre Schurrle and Lewis Holtby to bolster their attack in January. Bayern Leverkusen’s Schurrle is a versatile forward, who can play both through the center as well as down the wings. The 21-year-old is one of the most talented attacker in the present German squad having made his debut for the German national team back in 2010. Schurrle has been mostly deployed on the left wing for Leverkusen and has already made 11 appearances this season. The youngster came to prominence back in 2010-11 season when he racked up 15 goals and 4 assists for Mainz. At the start of the 2011-12 season Leverkusen signed him up and he has been a regular in the starting eleven ever since.
Back in August, Schurrle was subject of bid from Chelsea, but Leverkusen turned down the £20million offer from the English club. Arsenal will have to atleast match that bid in January if they are to secure his service.
The other German youngster linked with the Gunners is Schalke star Lewis Holtby. Holtby has been in the news recently after his agent revealed that they have received an ‘interesting proposal’ from an English club, which is believed to be Liverpool. Holtby, whose father is English, is an Everton fan and a move to Liverpool looks unlikely. The 22-year-old has made two appearances for the German national team and is in the final year of his current contract at Schalke. The attacking midfielder has been a key figure in Schalke’s wonderful season so far and already has three assists and three goals to his name in nine appearances for club so far this season.
Arsenal have significantly increased their scouting network in Germany in recent times. With the likes of Podolski, Mertesacker, Gnabry and Eisfeld in the squad, Arsene Wenger is slowly shifting his focus from France to Germany.
While Andre Schurrle is an exciting prospect, Arsenal will surely face a lot of competition from other clubs across Europe for his signature. It will also be interesting to see if Chelsea revives their interest in him during the winter transfer window. Holtby on the other hand looks to be an odd name to be linked with the Gunners, considering the number of options that Wenger already has at his disposal in that part of the field; that is unless Wenger is considering offloading some of the fringe players in the squad in January.
