Asmir BergovicDespite having two fairly good and young keepers between the posts, Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson repeatedly find their judgement being questioned by the media in an infuriatingly indirect manner. There have been reports that the Spanish youngster David De Gea was unhappy at the club and wanted to leave, while Anders Lindegaard has been kept himself in the news for other reasons altogether. As the debate over who must play against Manchester City in the big weekend derby rages on, United now find themselves linked to Asmir Begovic of Stoke City.

Begovic is presently 25 years old and stands at 6 feet and 5 inches. He signed for Stoke in 2010 and has since notched an impressive 70 appearances in two seasons for the Potters. There is no doubting the Bosnian keeper’s credentials, but it would be very unlike Manchester United to invest close to £25m on two young goal keepers and then scour the market looking for another one who is likely to cost £10m at the very least. Yes, the world knows by now that the goal keeping position is Sir Alex Ferguson’s Achilles heel; but it would be shocking if the United manager was to concede a defeat this early, in his efforts to mould a No.1 worthy of Manchester United out of either De Gea or Lindegaard.

Besides that, United’s most pressing area of concern is the central midfield at this moment as a majority of the fans do not prefer to watch Ryan Giggs deputize at that position in the absence of Carrick or Fletcher. While Paul Scholes can be magical on a good day despite his age, there is a palpable nervousness in the air when the ‘Ginger Prince’ is asked to take on the physical rigors of a two man midfield. Therefore it does look as though the story is a non- story, unless the rumours about David De Gea being unsettled at Manchester are true. If that is indeed the case, then it makes sense for United to invest in a Premier League tested goal keeper and Begovic is certainly one of the most reliable candidates at that age out there. Also, the last time United bought a Premier League proven goal keeper, he went on to become a bona fide legend at the club.

For his part, here’s a few quotes from Asmir Begovic about the situation –

‘It’s always nice when the biggest teams in the world are looking at you. It’s a compliment, but it doesn’t mean anything.
‘We keep our feet on the ground here and the manager wouldn’t let that change. I have three-and-a-half years on my contract and I am concentrating on playing and staying in the team and trying to help the team be successful.
‘I am happy here so there are no issues with that.’
