Liverpool are keen to re-sign Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid. The Reds have also kept an eye on CSKA Moscow attacker Keisuke Honda.
Xabi Alonso’s future at Real Madrid is in doubt as they are yet to hold talks to extend his current contract which expires in 2014. According to reports, Alonso is keen to an emotional return to the Premier League. Although it is being suggested that Alonso can leave the club in January, Real Madrid are unlikely to sell their key players mid-way through the season.
However, Alonso could re-sign for the Reds in the summer next season if Madrid fails to offer him a long-term contract. This news will certainly excite the Liverpool fans as Alonso has been a firm favourites among the Kopites during his stint at the club. Even captain Steven Gerrard has earlier expressed his desire to reunite with the Spanish midfielder. The Trio of Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano formed one of the most effective midfield trio in the club’s recent history. With Jose Mourinho’s future in doubt, a lot of players can leave the Spanish club next summer.
Alonso, who made 143 appearances for Liverpool during his five years stint at the club, has been the lynch-pin of the Real Madrid midfield since joining the Spanish giants in 2010. If Mourinho remains at the club next season, it is unlikely he will sell Alonso, but if the Portuguese manager leaves the club, it could pave the way for Alonso emotional return to red half of the Merseyside.
Liverpool are keeping an eye on Japanese attacking midfielder Keisuke Honda. Honda has made 71 appearances for the Russian club since signing from VVV Venlo in 2010. Honda has been publicly criticized by his manager recently and according to reports the Japanese star is keen to leave the club in January.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is said to be highly interested in signing the midfield dynamo. The 26-year-old attacker is currently into the final year of his present contract at CSKA Moscow and can negotiate a pre-contract with any club in January.
Lazio, who were close to signing Honda at the start of this season, could also revive their interest in the midfielder during the winter transfer window. German club Borussia Dortmund were also recently linked with a move for the Japanese star as they search for continue their search for Kagawa’s replacement.
Honda is a dynamic player who will add a lot of attacking threat to the Liverpool attack if Rodgers manages to sign him ahead of other potential buyers. The Japanese international has already made 40 appearances for his national team so far and was one of the rising star in the 2010 World Cup (where was played in the ‘false nine’ position for the Japanese team).
