Manchester United are linked with Greece international Vasilia Torosidis while Arsenal move close to sign Yann M’Vila. Bayern Munich on the other hand are observing Javi Martinez. Welcome to TheHardTackle’s daily transfer roundup where we bring you the latest developments in the transfer market, the rumours floating in and our insightful assessment of those.
Manchester United Observe Greece Full Back Vasilis Torosidis
The club’s official website reports the scouts are monitoring the progress of the Greece international at Euro 2012 and the 27-year-old might well be club’s target for the summer.
Torosidis brings with him versatility as he is capable of playing in more than one positions but he primarily will be United’s target for the role of Wing Back. Though Sir Alex Ferguson has a number of options to fill the Right Back slot, he may want to add another player of decent technical abilities and the Scot’s preference for players who can fit into multiple roles adds to the possibility of United making this signing. Torosidis, currently playing for Olympiakos has only one more year to go in his contract and this is the right time to sign him. The age is not exactly on his side to settle into an entirely new league but he is a gamble worth the taking. At Euro 2012, he has been one of the better performers for Greece and his disciplined and organised defending against Russia deserves a special mention. If signed, he would definitely not be part of Sir Alex’s long term vision for the club but with him being suitable to play both on the wings and in the midfield, the old man might strike the deal for somewhere around €7 million.
Arsenal & Bayern Munich – The Race For Yann M’Vila
Both the clubs have been keen to sign the Rennes midfielder but the latest developments in the market suggest Bayern have pulled out of the race and Arsenal are closer to the French international.
From the player’s perspective, it is hard to choose between the two clubs. Arsenal for years have been known for their affection for the French players and they certainly need to add a midfielder in their ranks who can protect their defence. Bayern Munich on the other hand can promise something to the player Arsenal can’t – trophies. The Germans too need a promising defensive midfielder to allow Schweinsteiger to focus much more on his playmaking duties. Currently Luis Gustavo does the job for Bayern but they certainly fall short of options the moment the Brazilian is unavailable. Like it was seen in the Champions League final, Bayern needed to deploy a player of Toni Kroos’ flair in the holding midfield in the absence of Gustavo.
However, if the rumours are to be believed, Arsenal are certainly ahead in the race and it should now only be a matter of time before they announce the signing officially. Few late twists and turns in this transfer should not surprise anybody though.
Manchester City Striker John Guidetti Wanted By Newcastle United
The youth prospect of the English champions who spend the last season on loan at Feyenoord is on the list of a number of Premier League clubs with the Magpies being the latest to show their interest.
They may buy the entire world but this is about one of their own. The 20-year-old Swedish forward was loaned out at Feyenoord last season and enjoyed the best season of his career scoring 20 goals in 23 appearances for the Dutch side. Despite his exploits, there’s little chance for the kid to even make it to City’s bench let alone their starting lineup. The English champions are currently aiming at adding more titles to their cabinet and at the same time need to look after the soon to be introduced financial regulations. Another loan move for the prodigious youngster could be decisive in his progress and should help City generate some more revenue. A club like Newcastle is the perfect place for Guidetti to find his true potential. He has already proven himself in the Dutch league and should he go on to do the same in the Premier League, he will certainly be knocking at Roberto Mancini’s doors pretty soon.
There are rumours of Newcastle losing Demba Ba in the summer. Alan Pardew may find a younger and probably a more potent replacement from Manchester if the loan deal goes through. This could be a deal that could help Newcastle’s short term and City’s long term goals respectively.
FC Internazionale Set To Sign Matias Silvestre From Palermo
According to Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, Inter will sign the Argentine centre back for a transfer fee of €8 Million.
After their dismal defensive showing throughout the last season, they definitely need to add solid defenders to their ranks. The news of Lucio’s departure in the summer is not helping the matters at all while Walter Samuel is not getting any younger. Ivan Cordoba’s retirement leaves Inter only with Andrea Ranocchia as an option in the centre defence and his performances last season were anything but encouraging. Amidst this scenario, Silvestre could be the addition that brings the much-needed sense of organisation to the defence. He has had a decent experience in Serie A and his presence should make a difference to the eternally shaky looking Inter defence at the moment. The team looked to have gathered some momentum under Stramaccioni towards the end of the season but they certainly need to rebuild this squad from the scratch should they aim to challenge for the silverware straightaway.
Bayern Munich Linked With Javi Martinez
According to reports the Athletic Bilbao centre half/midfielder is being monitored by the Bavarians who are looking at adding quality to the squad that finished trophyless last season.
The German giants require additions to their current squad, particularly in the defensive line that was caught unorganized and off guard by technically superior teams like Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid last season. While Bayern have flair players in abundance, it is the ones who can control the tempo and maintain the general levels of discipline that they are missing. Martinez has caught the attention of the world after a brilliant season with Bilbao and rumour has it Bayern are very keen on signing him this summer. While the price for this deal is certain to be hefty, the Spaniard could be a perfect addition to Jupp Heynckes’ side currently as he can be played both in the centre defence as well as in the holding midfield – two areas Bayern are susceptible in.
The likeliness of this deal going through is bleak though and the picture should become clearer in the days to come. After all, Bayern are not the only club interested in signing the 23-year-old.
- Juventus have officially completed the signing of Sebastian Giovinco.
- Clarence Seedorf has officially announced to leave AC Milan.
- Bayer Leverkusen have signed midfielder Carlinhos from Desportivo Brasil.
- PSV have announced the signing of goalkeeper Ruud Swinkels.
- German striker Julian Schieber has left Stuttgart to sign a 4 year deal with Borussia Dortmund.
- Robert Green has officially signed for Queens Park Rangers.
Some other rumours
- Malaga have made an offer to Sevilla for striker Alvaro Negredo.
- Sevilla have contacted Villarreal over the availability of Carlos Marchena.
- Tranquillo Barnetta whose contract with Leverkusen is about to expire is likely to join Schalke 04.
- Udinese face the challenge from Parma and Zenit St Petersburg to sign Alessandro Diamanti.
