Man United dropped a transfer bombshell by landing Arsenal superstar Robin van Persie, meanwhile Spurs finally gave in to Luka Modric’s plea as the Croatian is close to sealing his long awaited move to Bernabeau. In other news, Luis Saha could make his next move and this time to the Stadium of Light.
RvP Joins Man United
THT Verdict: Signed, sealed and delivered. A few days ago, Sir Alex had indicated that negotiations to bring last season’s Barclays Premier League player of the year were underway. However, it was still a major shock to the football fraternity when the news finally broke through that Robin van Persie had made the switch. Inevitable it may be, but still probably the most spectacular transfer of the season yet.
Reports suggest a fee around 23 million, with 15 million of those to be paid upfront and the rest are performance based incentives. For Arsenal, financially it makes sense to sell a 29 year old player with just over a year left on his contract for such hefty fee, however it does send out a dangerous signal. RvP had been the heart and soul of the North London club last campaign banging in goals left, right and center. Furthermore, he lead from the front and was the face of the club and it sets a dangerous precedence for the Gunners to be selling their most valued asset to a rival club.
For Man United, another striker might not have been the need of the hour as the club seems stocked with strikers galore. Nonetheless, players of this quality don’t come around this often and certainly RvP is a rare gem. Also, it sends a statement of intent by the Old Trafford club that United want to compete for top players and stay on top of the game.
Charlie Adam Linked With Everton
THT Verdict: Unlikely, Reports claim that Everton are ready to make a move for Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam who will be allowed to leave Anfield for £5million. Although Adam had a poor debut season at Liverpool and doesn’t seem the right fit for Brendon Rodgers football philosophy, yet it seems rather odd that Liverpool would be willing to sell to their hated neighbors. Player transfer between the two clubs have been few and far between and lately bordering on zilch.
Modric Off To Real Madrid
THT Verdict: Inevitable and now a reality too. Luka Modric and Real Madrid were eyeing each other up all summer and even a shrewd businessman like Daniel Levy couldn’t stand in their way. After starving off bids from Chelsea last summer, Spurs finally gave in and the Croatian is on his way to sunny climes of Madrid to join champions Real.
From Tottenham’s point of view, the reported fee of 26million seems a little under the market value but Levy’s hand must have been forced due to reluctance of the player to go anywhere but the Spanish giants. Nevertheless, it gives two weeks for their new manager to reinvest that amount in the squad to build on a 4th place finish last season. Will Villas Boas splurge on Moutinho?
Jose Mourinho has struck gold yet again and this time one of the most sought after midfield marshals, the likes of which are conspicuous by their absence. Luka Modric has been the Portuguese tactician’s primary target all summer and once Mourinho wants his man he usually gets him.
Louis Saha To Sunderland
THT verdict: Martin O’ Neill is looking to bloster his striking options since the end of last season but hasn’t had much success. He has tried to sign Steven Fletcher from Wolves on quite a few occasions already, but with no success. However, Saha – who is a free agent – looks more likely to join the Black Cats and given his fitness record, it is more likely to be a pay-as-you-play deal. The ex-United man can still offer a lot to a mid-table club like Sunderland, as he proved at Everton and also with Tottenham on few occasions last season.
Dos Santos Looking To Leave The Lane
THT verdict: Dos Santos has hardly been involved for Spurs ever since his move to the White Hart Lane, which is a mystery to say the least given his performances for the national team. The Mexican has become frustrated understandably and is now looking to move on to a new club in search of regular football. Inter are a possible destination with rumors of a swap deal between the clubs involving Julio Cesar doing the rounds.
Spurs, are in need of a goalkeeper with Brad Friedel being the only reliable custodian in their squad. However, Inter might not be willing to let go of the Brazilan, but may be tempted in a cash plus player deal.
