Man City eye Barcelona right-back Dani Alves, Florent Malouda to depart Chelsea, Arsenal cool interest in Yann M’Vila, Inter interested in signing Nigel de Jong while Real Madrid may ship Nuri Sahin to Tottenham to land Modric. With a slew of transfer stories breaking left, right and centre, we try separate the wheat from the chaff.
Manchester City Eye Barcelona Right-back Dani Alves
Dani Alves has, reportedly, angered the medical staff at Barcelona after he appeared in a friendly game for 25 minutes without a clearance from the club.
Off to Eastlands?
THT Verdict: The offence, if it was committed at all, isn’t big enough for a club to ship off a player who’s integral to their plans. Dani Alves is cut out for the way Barcelona play, is one of the best attacking full-backs (although being defensively suspect) in the world, and was a key component of the all-conquering side forged out by Pep Guardiola. With the Catalans out in the market for a new left-back, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll mess up their settled wing by selling the Brazilian, irrespective of what Man City throw at them. Moreover, City have decent cover at right-back in the form of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta. The move looks unlikely.
Florent Malouda To Depart Chelsea
Florent Malouda is on his way to one of the Brazilian clubs, if reports are to be believed.
THT Verdict: Florent Malouda has just an year remaining on his contract and going by his performances for Chelsea in the last year and a half, he’s certainly not someone the West London club could be ready to bank on for the next season. Chelsea have signed Marin and Hazard; both players capable enough to offer much, much more when fielded on the left wing. Then there’s Kevin de Bruyne, who will be ready in an year, if not already. The Blues aren’t expected to recover much money from the sale of the Frenchman but even if they are able to remove his wages from the total salary bill, they’ll be open to listen to offers. The move looks highly likely; if not to Brazil then to some other league.
Arsenal Cool Interest In Yann M’Vila
According to news in France, Arsenal have cooled off their interest in signing Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila because of his disciplinary issues. The Frenchman was reportedly involved in an argument with France coach Laurent Blanc and has been arrested on more than one occasion.
THT Verdict: If at all, Arsenal are more likely to be put off by his price-tag than by his disciplinary issues, as a manager of the stature of Arsene Wenger is more than capable of keeping a 21-year old player in control. Rennes expect anything over 20m GBP for their player, while Arsenal will not pay that kind of money. At 15m GBP though, the deal looks more likely to happen. The Gunners have Alex Song for the position, but are looking to add another defensive midfielder. At the moment, the deal appears to be in the balance. If Wenger manages to convince the player that his future lies at The Emirates, Rennes may have to lower their price.
Inter Interested In Signing Nigel de Jong
Inter have entered negotiations to sign Manchester City anchorman Nigel de Jong, according to reports in Italy.
THT Verdict: Manchester City have three holding midfielders in de Jong, Barry, and Toure, with latter expected to participate in African Cup every two years. City’s ambitions will see them participate in Champions League season after season and three defensive midfielders will be required to compete in multiple tournaments. Moreover, City is not a selling club and aren’t obviously in need of money to fund their purchases. Although the Dutchman would be a good signing for Inter, City are unlikely to part way with their midfield enforcer.
Real Madrid May Ship Nuri Sahin To Tottenham To Land Modric
Real Madrid are rumored to be ready to offer Turkish Midfielder Nuri Sahin to Tottenham, to sweeten the deal to bring Luka Modric to Santiago Bernabeu.
THT Verdict: Tottenham are anyway expected to lose Modric to one team or the other, so if Madrid offer a cash plus Sahin deal, Spurs will lap it up with both hands. Sahin, who’d moved to Spain last summer, is yet to settle down at Real with little opportunities coming his way. He is an extremely talented player, as was seen at Dortmund. However, Mourinho is believed to rate him very highly and sees him as an integral part of the Madrid midfield in the years to come and is unlikely to offer him to Spurs as a make-weight in the deal.
