Chelsea could bid for Cavani in their hunt for a striker, Manchester City are lining up Wolfsburg’s Simon Kjaer as an alternate to Daniel Agger, Madrid drop Modric chase and are now hot on the heels of Axel Witsel, Craig Bellamy is close to returning to Cardiff City and finally, Inter Milan are interested in signing Nigel de Jong from City. All these and much more in our daily transfer round-up.
Cardiff Close-In on Craig Bellamy
The big guns of English media are reporting that Craig Bellamy is now close to reuniting with his childhood club, Cardiff City.
THT Verdict: Likely. The forward has dismissed the interest shown by Queens Park Rangers in order to return to Cardiff City. Bellamy was one of the shining figures at Liverpool last season and scored some crucial goals for the Reds who were struggling in the League throughout.
Bellamy has determination but the pace and tenacity required to thrive in the Premier League deprives him of first team opportunities. At 33 years of age, it only makes sense for the Welshman to move to the Championship where he will be more of a pivotal player for Cardiff City.
Real Madrid Close-In Witsel
After being rebuffed in their attempts to land Tottenham’s Luka Modric, Real Madrid have now reportedly turned their attention towards Benfica’s Axel Witsel and are close to completing a £34M deal for the Belgian midfielder.
THT Verdict: Likely. A good option at the end of the day for Real Madrid who have found it hard to land Luka Modric. Witsel was instrumental in Benfica’s domestic and European campaigns last season and adds quality to a squad that could see Kaka move out this summer.
Although some reports suggest that Fabio Coentrao could move the other way on loan as part of the deal, Mourinho would prefer keeping the Portuguese left-back for next season in order to maintain squad depth.
Addition of Witsel to the likes of Ronaldo, Ozil and di Maria surely will embellish the Real Madrid squad for the upcoming season.
Cavani under Chelsea Radar
After Porto slammed a £40M price tag on Hulk, Chelsea have taken a detour and headed to Naples with the hope of signing Edinson Cavani, according to the Daily Star.
THT Verdict: Although the player has spoken of his desire to feature in the Premier League, any attempts to sign the Uruguayan now would just be shooting in the dark. Cavani scored 33 goals from 47 appearances last season and has certainly earned a reputation for himself.
Although linked to several clubs, Cavani has grown to become an important player at Napoli who will look to improve on last year’s fifth place finish, having narrowly missed out on clinching third.
Manchester City Turn To Simon Kjaer
Liverpool have slapped a £27M price tag on Daniel Agger. So, Manchester City have reportedly set their sights on another Dane – Simon Kjaer.
THT Verdict: Likely, and, it will be nothing short of a coup if Manchester City sign the 23 year-old center back. Kjaer has been currently left out of Denmark’s squad since coach Morten Olsen prefers for his players to sort out their transfer negotiations.
Kjaer was highly rated when Wolfsburg purchased the player in 2009 but the ever since his fallout with manager Felix Magath, Kjaer has been rumoured to leave the Volkswagen Arena. Manchester City might have come knocking at just the right time.
Kjaer is younger than Agger and will be available for a much lower fee than the Reds are demanding for the new Danish captain.
Inter Target Nigel de Jong
According to the Daily Mirror, Inter Milan have registered an interest in signing Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong. The player is said to be available at a cut-price of £7M.
THT Verdict: Likely. Nigel de Jong made just 11 Premier League starts last season and clearly doesn’t stand up to the competition of Barry and Toure. Selling him seems to be a sensible option, if Manchester City and Mancini are thinking so.
The only glitch in this deal could be the player’s wages. De Jong earns around £2.4M per season which presents itself as a very steep price for Inter Milan but if his agent can work things out with the Serie A side, de Jong could be an Inter Milan player before the start of next season.
