Chelsea set their eyes on Schurrle, Napoli linked with a move for Meireles, while Sigurdsson is off to Tottenham. With a slew of transfer stories breaking left, right and centre, we try separate the wheat from the chaff. Welcome to today’s round-up of daily transfer news.
Napoli targets Raul Meireles
According to Mirror, Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles is an £8million target for Serie A side Napoli.
THT Verdict: The Portuguese midfielder, who’s reached the semi-finals in Euro 2012, had signed for Chelsea from Liverpool for £10m last summer. Despite some good performances for The Blues last season, he was quite average overall. If Chelsea are to sign a top quality central midfielder, then he may become surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. However, we feel, before him the West London club should look to offload Michael Essien, as on present form Raul offers better value on the pitch. This supposed deal looks unlikely at the moment, but the situation can change if a signing is made and the sale of Meireles brings more money on the table than the sale of Essien.
Manchester United look to add Porto winger Rodriguez to their roster
Man United, as per Dailymail, have stepped up their pursuit of James Rodriguez amid reports of a £30million-plus bid for the 20-year old winger being rejected by Porto.
THT Verdict: Even though Rodriguez is one of the most sought after talents across Europe, the last thing on United’s radar will be a winger. With Young, Nani, Valencia, Giggs and a couple of others already in the squad, the Red Devils have an embarrassment of riches in the wide midfield department and hence it is highly unlikely that Sir Alex would pay such a stupendous fee to get a relatively inexperienced player to play on the wings. Unlikely.
Tottenham beats Liverpool in the race to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Guardian claims that Spurs, who are presently without a manager, have beaten the likes of Liverpool and Swansea and have agreed a fee of €10m fee with Hoffenheim.
THT Verdict: The deal is as good as done. The Iceland international, who performed admirably well for Swansea last season, appeared to be on the verge of signing for Liverpool, after holding prolonged talks with the Reds. However, Spurs have moved swiftly to sign the midfielder, ahead of Rodgers. With Luka Modric yet again expected to be embroiled in a transfer tug of war, the signing of 22-year old midfielder is a good move for the North London side. The reason behind Sigurdsson’s choice is hard to understand, if at all it’s his choice, especially as in Merseyside he would have got a chance to work for a manager, under whom he’d excelled last season.
Chelsea turns to Andre Schurrle, after no progress in Hulk and Moses talk
Bayer Leverkusen star linked with a move to West London, after a strong performance in the game against Greece.
THT Verdict: For long, Chelsea have been linked with a move for a right-forward/winger. A month ago, it was Hulk; a week ago, it was Moses, and today it’s the young German International. There’s no smoke without fire and the Blues appear to be looking for a better option than Daniel Sturridge on the right-wing, and for a price of around £12m, 21-year old Schurrle offers better value for money than £38m rated, 25-year old Hulk. If Porto don’t budge from their evaluation of the Brazil international, the Blues may be tempted to save money by signing either Moses or Schurrle, while utilizing the available funds for other reinforcements in central midfield and at right-back.
Bayern turns their attention towards Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic
According to Dailymail, German giants Bayern Munich are now lining up a move for Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic.
THT Verdict: Mario Madzukic has done his reputation no harm by netting 3 goals at the Euros, thus attracting interest from numerous elite clubs. The Wolfsburg striker, who joined the club from Dinamo Zagreb is expected to cost 10-12 million Euros and has two years left to run on his contract. With Bayern looking to add impetus to their strike force before the season begins, and Dzeko seemingly beyond their price range, this deal looks very likely to go through.
