Manchester City continue with their persistence to sign Agger, AC Milan and Aston Villa target AZ Alkmaar full-back Simon Poulsen, Chelsea return with improved bid for Cavani, Arsenal want striker Kevin Mirallas from Olympiakos and finally, Manchester United look to end the van Persie saga with a new offer for the Arsenal front-man.
Manchester City Come Back for Agger
After having three successive bids rejected, City are adamant enough to feature in the tabloids in their fourth attempt to sign Liverpool center-back Daniel Agger. The Reds are holding out for a sum in the region of £27M to get them engaged in talks.
THT Verdict: Unlikely. It couldn’t be clearer that Agger doesn’t want to leave Liverpool after the player himself declared his love and loyalty towards the club and its supporters. This, added to the fact that Brendan Rodgers has publicly confessed his interest in the Dane adds veracity to the inference that if this move does go through, it will only be because the higher management is demanding it so.
Agger is a vital cog in the Liverpool setup this season because of his successful partnership with Martin Skrtel. With the club coming close to securing a contract extension for the Slovakian, it is also likely that they will have an improved offer on the table for Daniel Agger too.
Manchester City have taken a while to kick-off their activities in the transfer market but rumour is that the Citizens are looking to experiment with a three-man defense line for the upcoming season. With Kompany and Lescott already in their inventory and Savic still pretty raw for the Premier League, one can understand why they want to go for someone as established as Agger. However, it is easier said than done.
AC Milan Eye Simon Poulsen
According to reports, AC Milan have entered the race for the AZ Alkmaar left-back Simon Poulsen who is also rumoured to be on Aston Villa’s radar.
THT Verdict: Likely. Milan have had problems filling in the left-back slot and will be looking to place a quality player after Antonini failed to raise the bar and Bosman arrival Taiwo hasn’t really set San Siro ablaze with his talent. Poulsen could be an answer better than Taiwo and possibly better than Antonini, although proving yourself in the land of defenders is totally different thing.
You need to have a very strong reason to turn down Milan for a mid-table team like Aston Villa in the Premier League. Poulsen also has the guarantee of first-team chances if he does choose to switch to San Siro. All these factors favour a move to the Italian giants rather than a move to Villa Park.
Chelsea Return for Cavani
It is reported that Chelsea have come back with an improved offer for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani – one which involves Raul Meireles going the other way in a player-plus-cash deal.
THT Verdict: Maybe. With Drogba’s departure and Lukaku headed out on loan, Chelsea are short of strikers to support Fernando Torres, who is yet to get his Chelsea career off to a start so there is no doubt that they do need a target man.
But having already burnt their fingers on proven, expensive strikers before, they will have to think twice before they table any offer. Also, with the ongoing transfer talks for the likes of Victor Moses and Andre Schurrle, it is likely that the Blues will wait it out a bit longer before making a move for Cavani.
Another reason this transfer could go through is that the player is devoid of Champions League football this season after the club failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition which only helps Chelsea’s case, being recently crowned Champions of Europe.
Arsenal in for Mirallas
Arsenal are set to bolster their attack further by securing the services of Olympiakos striker Kevin Mirallas. A bid in the region of £6M is said to suffice for the Belgian forward.
THT Verdict: Maybe. First and foremost, it depends on the van Persie’s departure. Manchester United are believed to be hopeful of wrapping up a deal this week for the Dutchman. If this goes through, then Arsenal may add another striker to their squad.
Given that England has become quite an attraction for upcoming Belgian footballers, coupled with the fact that fellow Belgium teammate Thomas Vermaelen plies his trade with Arsene Wenger’s side, it shouldn’t be too much of a trouble for the Gunners to land their target, if they choose to do so.
Manchester United Present New van Persie Offer
According to media sources, Manchester United have tabled an offer in the region of £20M for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie. Many believe this is going to be the final offer by the Red Devils for the prolific goal scorer.
THT Verdict: Likely. There has been a lot of back-and-forth going on between the two clubs over van Persie. Ever since Juventus and Manchester City ruled themselves out of the race for the forward’s signature, United have been in the clear to bring Arsenal’s top scorer last season to Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been left in the lurch many a time during this transfer window, his targets been snapped by other clubs. With the new season drawing closer, he will make sure not to leave any stone unturned in his efforts to bring in Robin van Persie.
If this deal goes through, then expect Arsenal and Manchester United matches to be lit with a lot more fury than excitement.
