Bayern Munich get their primary transfer target as Javi Martinez deal nears conclusion. In other news Alex Song could be the next Arsenal player out of the door as a dream move to Barcelona approaches. All this and more in our daily transfer roundup.
Bayern Close On Martinez Deal
THT Verdict: Done deal. After months of persuasion and negotiations, Bayern finally land their main transfer target of the summer – Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez. Bilbao chairman Uli Hoeness has admitted that the deal will be concluded shortly, “FC Bayern have raised the bar and have the means. You have to admit this amount is madness [but] the board of directors has given the green light.”
Martinez is probably the most sought after youngster with his ability to seamlessly play in either defence or central midfield; ergo Bayern fans must be well pleased. For Athletic they knew it was coming but worryingly it could kick start an exodus from San Mames with Fernando Llorente next in line to depart.
Alex Song Eyeing Barca Move
THT Verdict: Highly probable. Song’s head has been turned by a move to the Spanish giants and reports suggest that a deal will be concluded soon. Asked on Friday morning whether Song’s departure, and more signings, could be on the cards, Wenger responded: “Both can happen.” Nuri Sahin has been touted as the replacement for the Cameroon international.
Surprising move yet again from the Gunners as they look to build for the future, Song was one of the most improved players last season for Wenger and losing him could set them back.
Chelsea Inquire About Chicharito
According to media rumors, Chicharito is keen to leave Old Trafford following the transfer of van Persie which will move the Mexican further down the pecking order. Also, there is no secret about Chelsea needing another striker with just Torres and Sturridge left at di Matteo’s disposal. Hernandez, as he has proved with the Red Devils, is a lethal striker and would be welcome addition to the Blues squad.
However, Fergie is least likely to set his prime asset to a rival club and has already stated to keep the quartet of RvP, Rooney, Welbeck and Chicharito as his strike options. Nonetheless, if the Blues offer a hefty amount, the manager might be interested to sell. For now though, Chicharito is set to wear the red of United.
Mirallas Set For Everton
THT Verdict: Done deal. After selling youngster Jack Rodwell, Moyes is looking to reinvest the cash and Belgian international Mirallas could be the man to take the Merseyside club forward. At 6million, the forward represents value for money and could prove to be another David Moyes masterstroke.
The forward has experience in Ligue 1 with Lille and St Etienne but has spent the past two years in Greece with Olympiakos, scoring 20 league goals for the club last season.
Spurs Want Meireles
THT Verdict: Could happen. While at Chelsea, Villas-Boas had signed Meireles last summer. With the manager now in charge at White Hart Lane, his countryman could follow suit. However whether Di Matteo is willing to sell to a rival remains to be seem.
Also Raul Meireles had a decent season last term with the Blues culminating in a blast of glory at the dearth. Perhaps Chelsea wouldn’t want to sell at all.
Clint Dempsey Goes On Strike
THT Verdict: Clint Dempsey refused to play for Fulham over the weekend and was subsequently fined. However, the American international has burnt all his bridges with the London club and doesn’t want to wear the Fulham jersey again.
Sources suggest Dempsey could be heading to Merseyside as the Reds had been following the Fulham man all summer. Liverpool could most certainly do with his efficiency in front of goal.
