Chelsea’s biggest win over Spurs had come during the first World War, when the Stamford Bridge club defeated their rivals 8-1.
Chelsea traveled to White Hart lane in December, 1997; they hadn’t lost a game against Tottenham since 1990. The result that day, aside from the wartime demolition, was their biggest win against Spurs, reaffirming their dominance in this particular London Derby.
Spurs lost 1-6 to Chelsea, with Tore Andre Flo scoring a hattrick, and Roberto di Matteo, Dan Petrescu, and Mark Nicholls adding one goal each. Spurs, who were 17th in the league before this match, had managed to hold Chelsea to 1-1 by half-time. However, after di Matteo scored in the 47th minutes and Zola dropped deeper to pull the strings from midfield, Spurs had no answer to Chelsea’s charge whatsoever.
