Tottenham Hotspur Target Decides To Stay At Porto; His Agent Reveals His Love For Barcelona
The Portuguese midfielder had been linked with a move to White Hart Lane all summer. Tottenham were close to landing him in the summer transfer window after a fee was agreed between the two clubs on the deadline day. But the deal failed to materialize after Porto attempted to increase their demands in the closing moments. The transfer window closed before Moutinho could agree personal terms with the London club and Tottenham were left frustrated.
There were talks that Spurs could go back for Moutinho in January as Andre Villas-Boas is a big admirer of the midfielder. But now the Portuguese international has revealed that he has decided to stay at Porto saying he believes in the club’s ‘value and quality’.
“I’ve made the decision to stay with Porto.
“We believe in the value and quality we have here. I’m happy and what I want most is to win against PSG.” – Moutinho was quoted in a Portuguese newspaper.
The above comments comes just hours after his agent revealed that the 26-year-old would love to play for Barcelona!
“We must take into account the player’s interest. He would love to play for Barcelona and this option will remain a priority,” Moutinho’s agent Pini Zahavi told Izvestia.
“I think Barcelona’s style of play fits Moutinho and he has also long been an admirer of the Catalan side.”
Russian club Zenit are also said to be preparing a bid for the midfielder in January. Although Porto have played hard ball, the Portuguese club is unlikely to reject any bid that matches their valuation of the player.
Chelsea Left-Back Back On PSG’s Radar
PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti has praised Chelsea defender Ashley Cole.
Ashley Cole has been linked with a possible move to PSG this January. The England international is into the last year of his current contract at Stamford Bridge and reports suggest that talks of an extension has hit a road block.
Carlo Ancelotti, who has managed Ashley Cole during his days at Chelsea, is an admirer of the defender. The PSG manager has said that Cole is the best left-back in the world and has labeled rumours linking him to PSG as ‘normal’.
“A lot of players are linked with Paris St-Germain in the market. The newspapers said that 100 players could come here.
“For this season, we have a very good squad but next year, I don’t know what is going on. Ashley Cole is the best left-back in the world at the moment.” – The former Chelsea manager told press.
Reports suggest that Ashley Cole is looking for a long term contract as he approaches the fag end of his career, while Chelsea are unwilling to give any player above 30 a big contract extension. Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho are also said to be monitoring Cole’s situation at Chelsea and if the English club decides to let him go in January, it could initiate a bidding war between the two big money powerhouse.
Roy Keane Keen To Succeed Kean At Blackburn Rovers
The Manchester United legend is interested in the vacant managerial job at Blackburn Rovers.
Steve Kean resigned from his post of manager of the club few days back and Eric Black has been the caretaker manager since. Shebby Singh, who was appointed as the ‘Global football adviser’ by the Venky’s, has said that the club will be careful in selecting the right candidate for the job.
“We have to be very careful about the choice we make. We have been through difficult times and now we must make the right decision.”- Singh said.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane is said to be interested in the job at Ewood Park. Keane has received an offer from Turkish club Kasimpasa, but has kept the £1.4million-a-year offer on hold as he waits for an official contact from Blackburn Rovers. Keane would certainly meet Venky’s requirement of a high profile manager, but given both the parties’ reputation – this could be a match made in hell.
Roberto Martinez Fined For His Post-Match Comments
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has been fined for his post-match comments after the defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard blasted the referee for awarding the penalty to Danny Welbeck which Robin van Persie converted. Welbeck went down under a challenge from Wigan goalkeeper Ali al-Habsi. The replay showed that there was minimal contact and Roberto Martinez was critical of the officials after the match.
The Wigan boss said after the match –
“You know what he is trying to do. I have come to United three times before today and for whatever reason we don’t seem to be measured in the same manner as the team at home.
“Today the penalty is as bad a decision as you are going to see in the Premier League. In many ways, you feel as though you are fighting against a mountain.”
The FA charged Martinez with the breach of FA Rule E3 and has handed him a fine of £10,000 after the Wigan manager admitted his mistake. A statement released by the FA reads –
“The charge was in relation to a breach of FA Rule E3 concerning media comments which implied that the match referee and/or match officials in general are motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute.
“Martínez, who had requested a personal hearing, was also warned as to his future conduct.”
Recently the standard of refereeing has come under a lot of scrutiny from managers, players, fans and media. The FA certainly needs to look into this matter as questionable officiating also brings the ‘game into disrepute.
