In the 2008-09 season, Liverpool came perilously close to snatching the league title away from Manchester United. The season saw the club from Anfield play some exceptional football, as they possessed arguably the best central midfield in Europe at the time with Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano. The same season also saw them humiliate United at Old Trafford and thump Real Madrid over two legs, among other emphatic wins.
One of those emphatic wins was at St. James’ Park (now called The Sports Direct Arena) during the festive season when Liverpool secured a huge win over The Magpies to cement their place at the top of the table. In a 1-5 defeat at home, Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given was BBC’s Man of the Match, which shows the scoreline could have entered into double digits.
