The transfer season is on in full swing and a host of names have been linked to Liverpool. Veterans like Fabio Aurelio, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriquez have all left Anfield while Fabio Borini has become the first signing in Brendan Rodgersai??i?? ambitious project.

There are plenty more arrivals and departures to follow in the coming months. Clint Dempsey and Joe Allen have been strongly linked to Liverpool. What would their transfers mean for The Reds? THT takes a closer look.

Clint Dempsey

Transfer Rating [7/10]

RumorsAi??have been steadily gaining pace about the 29-year-old Fulham frontmanai??i??s transfer to Liverpool. Dempsey enjoyed his best season in the Premier League last year, finishing third highest in the scoring charts. The attacking midfielder scored 17 goals and had 6 assists in the last season and his displays have attracted interest from a host of clubs.

Dempsey is versatile, hardworking and competitive – traits which the manager holds in high regard. Dempsey has played mostly as a left midfielder for Fulham over the years but was employed as an attacking midfielder last season. He was also used as a striker on five occasions and took to the position like a duck to water, scoring 5 goals.

Dempsey can be a replacement for Andy Carroll but it is more likely that he will be used as an attacking midfielder playing behind the target man. Dempsey can also be used as a left forward in the likely event of Craig Bellamyai??i??s departure.

Liverpool

On his way to Merseyside?

Liverpool

The American international had 3.9 shots and 1.5 key passes per game last season and was a constant threat for the opposition defense. His pressing high up the pitch will help Liverpool win the ball back quickly in dangerous areas. Dempseyai??i??s aggression might land him a booking every now and then but he would add some much-needed steel to the side which has often been accused of not being able to ai???win uglyai??i?? when required.

Dempsey however, does not quite fit into FSG’s ai???moneyballai??i?? approach to football. At 29, Dempsey is at the peak of his powers but is not likely to have any significant resale value for Liverpool. However, FSG have been looking to actively promote Liverpool in USA and Dempseyai??i??s transfer would certainly help to sell some extra shirts across the Atlantic.

This move makes sense, both footballing wise as well as marketing wise, and at A?8 million, Dempsey could prove to be a good bit of business for The Reds..

Joe Allen

Transfer Rating: [8/10]

At the heart of the ai???Swanselonaai??i?? midfield, this 22-year-old from Carmarthen, Wales ran the show in a manner which his more illustrious Spanish counterparts would have been proud of. A 92% pass completion rate is quite a staggering achievement in itself but to have achieved it in the helter-skelter of the Premier League speaks volumes for this ladai??i??s talent.

Brendan Rodgers has worked closely with Allen before at Swansea and is keen on securing the diminutive Welshmanai??i??s services.Ai??Perhaps there is no other player more suited to Rodgersai??i?? brand of pass and move than Joe Allen. At Liverpool, Joe Allen along with Jordan Henderson would be competing for midfield places with world-class talents like Lucas and Steven Gerrard and there is no end to how much he would benefit from playing alongside these players on a daily basis.

Pass Master

Liverpool

Much like Xavi at Barcelona, Joe Allen was used by Rodgers as a central play-maker at Swansea. Along with Leon Britton, the duo was responsible for breaking up opposition play, recycling possession and initiating attacks. Apart from his obvious passing ability, Allen is also a tenacious tackler and reads the game well. He will be expected to demonstrate the same qualities at Liverpool. If the Merseyside team do well then it is likely they will play over 70 games this season and Allen will get plenty of chances to impress the Anfield faithful.

Liverpool were found wanting in the midfield in the absence of Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva. With the likes of Allen in the squad, Liverpool would still be able to compete given any contingencies. His arrival though could spell the exit for Charlie Adam who might not fit into Rodgersai??i?? footballing philosophy.

There is very little downside to this deal but the transfer fee could be a sticking point. Media speculation pegs the figure at anywhere between A?10m and A?20m. If Rodgers manages to secure his services around the A?10m mark, then it would definitely be smart business by Liverpool.

Joe Allen is only 22 and is sure to improve further. If he were to be sold in the future, he is likely fetch a substantial amount and this would be in line with FSGai??i??s new policy regarding transfers. If Allen can continue to showcase his unbelievable from last season, Liverpool may well become the passing machine which fans are hoping for..

Life Without Wingers at Liverpool

Liverpool have had some of the best wingers in the game over the years and the likes of John Barnes and Steve Heighway kept The Kop bouncing throughout the 70ai??i??s and 80ai??i??s. But, in the modern era, the RedsAi?? have had a real dearth of quality wingers and many have correlated this with a lack of premiership titles won.

Inverted wingers/Winger forwards are in vogue and Liverpool has started to make the effort to secure quality additions up-front. In the current Liverpool squad, only Stewart Downing can be termed as a traditional winger. Liverpool have not been linked with any traditional wingers in this transfer window either as Rodgers’ footballing philosophy does not include classical wingers.

The manager has been vocal about playing three forwards upfront to solve Liverpoolai??i??s goal scoring problems and in the coming season, we will probably find the likes of Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Clint Dempsey playing as a flexible front three. Raheem Sterling and Daniel Pacheco are two players from the youth set up who would be perfect for this system and could get some playing time given the extra games that Liverpool would have to play this season.

A team without wingers seems to be the way forward for Liverpool. Only time will tell if the move yields some long sought after silverware.

Brendan Roger will not last a season at Liverpool, he only had one season in the premier league and we all know players play above themselves first season

  2. jerry says:

Life Without Wingers at Liverpool ? your talking rubbish.

Swansea had among the best width in PL last season

  3. peter says:

I won’t to thank you for your objective in your analysis but I love add that the strong part of man united is the wings. Pls Mr BR kindly get us a realible winger.it all easy to make out in the midfield and when that happen you penetrate throuigh the wings. I just hope this coach read our write out

  4. Aashish says:

FSG owning a MLB team does not imply a “Moneyball” approach to LFC management, or even to the Red Sox for that matter. If anything, it was a completely different approach, that enabled the Boston team to reach the World series 6 times, and win it twice, since the FSG takeover. Considering, the shrewd business policy that they bring to the table, Liverpool can very well be a self sufficient club in the next few years. However, in my opinion, FSG are happy to foot the bill till then.

The key policy that FSG implements would aim at bringing down the average wages, bringing the average age down, increasing the club brand value, and structuring the LFC operations to be independently and efficiently managed, without the parent company’s interference. Bringing in Brendan Rodgers was only the first of the moves taken in this direction.

FSG have been in the sports management arena long enough to realize that an immediate return to Europe is not a realistic demand; Kenny wasn’t let go for that. And unlike a certain red nosed gaffer’s accusation, the Suarez-Evra situation didn’t entice it either. Kenny came in as a stop gap to stabilize the Roy Hodgson and Gillett-Hicks debacle. The fans’ pressure and the improved performance were the only reasons Kenny was asked to continue. Despite his prowess and the history that he brings with him, Kenny proved over the previous season, that he cannot adapt to the current game and today’s football management. Brendan Rodgers, however, has displayed his suitability as a tactician, both on and off the pitch.

Clubs have held Liverpool to ransom over the last decade in the transfer market. The way Aquillani and Cole were loaned, and the exorbitant price paid for Carroll, Downing, and Henderson are only recent examples. Such ill managed transactions have led to Newcastle approaching Carroll on loan, the Swans quoting excess of 15M for Allen, and the cottagers quoting in excess of 10M for Dempsey. This is the true test for Rodgers capabilities. Succumbing to such demands would only continue the mismanaged legacy of Liverpool’s bad decisions. If the Borrini deal is any indicator, I’m sure Rodgers will wait it out, and snap Allen and Dempsey for a combined fee of less than 20M by the end of the transfer window. These are the only two first team inbound transfers that might happen over the summer.

The enigma of Andy Carroll is yet to be completely unraveled. Borrini and Carroll competing to be the first choice striker would be more desirable than letting Borrini be comfortable at the helm, without any cover, and all this, while paying for Carroll to flourish at a different club. It is in the best interest of both the club and the player that Carroll stays and develops, at least for another season.

Rodgers’ next task is to slowly cut the wage bill. Kuyt and Maxi’s departure for modest sums might be frowned upon. However, this can be viewed as the departure of two high earning, past their peak stars, relegated to the bench. The next in line would be Bellamy, another high earner and not in the Rodgers plan. Ideally, one of Cole or Aquillani’s departure would free up more wage commitments, but the mistakes of the past decade may not be fully rectified this year.

With Liverpool set to play over 70 games this season, a good squad is extremely important. This can be examined with a depth chart. It is assumed that Dempsey and Allen are acquired, Bellamy is on his way out and Wilson, Suso, Flanagan, Robinson, Sterling, and Ecclestone are added to the first team roster. It is assumed that a good depth provides at least 3 players in each position- a regular, a backup and a young reserves player.
    GK- Reina, Doni, Jones, Gulacsi
CB- Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, Coates, Wilson
    RB- Johnson, Kelly, Flanagan
    LB- Enrique, Robinson
    CDM- Lucas, Spearing
    CM- Aquilani, Adam, Shelvey, Allen
    AM- Gerrard, Cole, Henderson
    RF- Suarez, Suso, Pacheco
    LF- Dempsey, Downing, Sterling
    ST- Borrini, Carroll, Ecclestone

I am confident that this roster can get us through to an ECC spot, where we can attract better talent. The imminent retirement of Carragher clears 4M a year; however, a capable backup should be sought or developed. Doni and Jones have both lived in the shadows of Reina. A more capable backup to replace both might be needed. Left back is an area of concern, with Robinson being the only backup and Enrique leaving a lot to be desired. Spearing’s performance in Lucas’ absence last season was not inspirational, but with the abundance of talent in the midfield, it is not a matter of concern.
With FSG’s guidance and with Rodgers at the helm, I hope to see our wage bill cut to 50% of earnings this year(from 65%), a plan for Anfield revamp – on the lines of the Fenway revamp, market penetration in the United States, and most importantly, the team playing the passing game of the Alonso-Mascherano-Gerrard era. The cups and bragging rights will follow.

Long, maybe I should have blogged it. :p

  5. Anthony says:

Dempsey is a 5 times better signing than allen. Having to pay extra based on potential is the last thing Liverpool need at the moment. They cannot afford another speculative signing to go wrong and with Gerrard back there will not be room for him this year. Dempsey is experienced, and provides what liverpool lack the most, goals from midfield, or just plain goals. Liverpool has a very highly rated defence and with lucas and stevie g should be just fine in the middle. Dempsey’s value is much lower because he’s approaching 30 and he’s American. You’ll never find another player who is the highest scoring midfielder in the league for 2 years under 30 and valued at 7 mil. If he were English he’d cost twice as much easily. Probably the most underrated attacking player in a decade in the prem

  6. Snail man says:

Need Allen. Dont think gerrad can last the pace now. No B/up for Lucas and gerrad. one hamstring pulled and we are in the shit pit. Adam and the other give nightmare to all.

  7. Rithwik says:

What rubbish… Rodgers is going to make history repeats…Borini is a sign of this. If Joe Allen joins then surely 4th place guaranteed even though the owners don’t compulsorily need it this season…
