The 116th edition of IFA Shield kicked off in Kolkata on Saturday. Record winners East Bengal defeated Bhawanipore 2-1 in the opening match. Robin Singh scored both goals for East Bengal while Biswajit pulled a goal back for Bhawanipore club.

Mohammedan SC coach Aloke Mukherjee expected doubt about standards of refereeing before his team made the journey to Siliguri to participate in final round of I-League Division-2. Meanwhile, Kalight MS has plans to scout youngsters in Siliguri when the team plays their Siliguri leg matches. Some of these scouted players may be signed for the club next season.

Transfer rumours have surfaced before the end of the season. It is being rumoured that Tolgay Ozbey, whose contract ends this season will join either Mohun Bagan or Dempo. Ranty Martins, who expressed a desire to play in Kolkata last month, is being linked with East Bengal. Odafa Okalie, whose performances have mesmerized Mohun Bagan fans, can stay for one more season in Bagan but he is reportedly asking for Rs. 3.5 crores to sign for one more season. Denson Devadas is also Mohun Bagan bound as per reports.

West Bengal sports Minister Madan Mitra announced of giving a football scholarship named after Sailen Manna, in Manna’s Memorial Function held in Mohun Bagan ground on Saturday. Mitra said that 20 footballers will be selected from different districts in West Bengal and given a one time amount of Rs. 25,000 and a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5000. A special committee will recruited to handpick these players.
