Arsenal Corner : Yann M’vila Can Put Alex on ‘Song’

Statistically Alex Song has been one of the most efficient midfielders for Arsenal in the recently concluded Premier league season. Song is 3rd in the list of most assists in EPL last season with 11. His stat of 1.4 key passes per game also makes for good reading. The Cameroon International has been one of the main reasons why Arsenal have been able to recover from a poor start to the campaign and managed to qualify for Champions League next season. But stats and the euphoria of finishing 3rd, did hide a lot of things.

For the Gooners, the end of the season brought with it a paradox – something which has been lingering for many seasons now. At one end of the paradox was a feeling of exultation for finishing 3rd and qualifying for Champions League specially after such a dismal start to the season. At the other end was a question – should a club of Arsenal’s stature be pleased with a 3rd place finish and such long barren trophy-less run? In truth the fans shouldn’t be pleased.

The story of Alex Song is a mirror image of the above questions. Should the fans be pleased with Song becoming such an attacking threat or should they worry about the lack of tactical discipline that is present in his game?

Song at Arsenal : A tactical enigma

Arsenal Arsenal Arsenal

Alex Song, over the past two seasons, has seen his stock rise unprecedentedly. He has improved immensely, specially his attacking side of the game. Having established an almost telepathic connection with Robin van Persie, the duo has been involved in many breath-taking attacking moves for Arsenal where Song has regularly found his captain’s wonderfully timed runs with superbly executed through balls. But despite such moments of brilliance the question still remains – does Alex Song justify the role of a holding midfielder in the team?

For a holding midfielder, the primary task should be that of protecting his defense, covering the spaces left behind by marauding full-backs/advancing midfielders and protecting the team against counter-attacks when they lose possession. This is where question marks are raised upon Song. On paper, the Gunners have good individuals lined up in their defense, who may not be ‘world-class’ but these names should theoretically be good enough to keep far more clean sheets than they actually end up doing. The problem lies in defensive organization of the team.

In a 4-2-3-1 formation that Wenger employs, the two holding midfielders play a pivotal role. When the wing-backs move forward in attack, these two holding midfielders are expected to cover the space left behind. Similarly, when opposition attacks down the wings, they are expected to double with the full-backs to stop them as in this formation the wingers/wide forwards are placed higher up the field plus Walcott or Gervinho are not known for tracking back and helping out the defense.

This adds more responsibility on Song and Arteta to cover for them. Apart from the full-backs, Vermaelen is an offensive minded center back and he often joins the attack higher up the field, hence leaving space for the opponents to exploit if the possession is lost. This is where Song is expected to drop back in defense and help out. But problematically for Wenger, this is where Song’s short comings are exposed, more often than not. His biggest weakness is positional discipline.

Some of these disciplinary frailties in Song have been covered up this season due to the presence of Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard has allowed Song to move forward more regularly, but Arteta is not a permanent solution to Song’s problem. The former Everton man is more adept at playing a deep-lying play-maker’s role, than being an anchor man. In fact, quite opposite to what has happened last season, as ideally it must be Song providing the required defensive cover to Arteta.

Song’s adventurous runs forward, neglecting his defensive duties have left Arsenal exposed too often at the back. What this Arsenal team needs most at present is someone like Gilberto Silva or even Mathieu Flamini. Someone, who will do all the dirty work in front of the back four, someone who will resist moving out of his position to join in attack; an invisible shield. This is where M’vila comes in to the picture.

21-year-old Rennes midfielder Yann M’vila has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. The Frenchman, one feels will be the anchor man for Arsenal in their midfield. M’vila has had another wonderful season at the French club, and he brings to the plate what Song doesn’t; discipline. His offensive stats are not as spectacular as that of Song, but his defensive stats are definitely better. Having averaged 3.1 tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game, M’vila will add a lot of steel to the Gunner’s midfield.

Arsenal target M'vila : The solution

Arsenal Arsenal Arsenal

The Frenchman’s transfer doesn’t necessarily mean Song’s career would take a setback at the Emirates. In fact, M’vila’s presence will help Wenger deploy Song in a position which is far more suited to his game. The Cameroonian would excel in a far more attacking role, without having to worry too much about his defensive duties. Alex Song and M’vila can form a wonderful partnership in front of the defense with Song playing the deep-lying play-maker’s role and joining attack, while M’vila staying back and covering the defense. It makes for a perfect pair.

In recent football history, the role of a midfielder who plays in front of a defense and that of the one who plays just behind a striker, has changed significantly. A gradual change of approach has been noticed where, the defensively combative players are being employed in much attacking role, while a creative midfielder plays behind them. Players like Yaya Toure, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Arturo Vidal have excelled in their advance role, while players like Pirlo & Seedorf dictated play from behind.

Instead of providing the creative midfielder a cover from behind, these players provide cover from the front. They act like a shield, which allows the deep-laying play-maker to dictate the game from behind. With M’vila in their ranks, Arsene can release Alex Song to a similar role, but for that there needs to be a change in formation. The 4-2-3-1 cannot support Song in an advanced role, atleast not effectively.

Wenger needs to employ either a formation with a 3-man defense or a narrow formation similar to AC Milan in a 4-3-1-2 (which looks highly unlikely). But either way, Song would provide an excellent tactical option with M’vila taking up his defensive responsibility. For what tactics would suite Arsenal next season, with Wilshere back in the team and possible arrival of M’vila, let’s leave that for another discussion.

Arsene Wenger needs to sign M’vila, to not only secure Arsenal’s midfield, but to also get the best out of Alex Song.

Sorry but your is bullshit. Why change so much to compromise a guy who tackles like a crab. 11 assists for a defensive midfielder who contributed to us conceding tbe most number of goals in so many seasons. A decent player in his position would have assisted 2 goals. But we would have conceded about a lot less than we did. Song is not arsenal quality and at his best should be in our reserve team. How dare you compare him to Gilberto and Flamini. How do they they give knobs like you to write articles. I live in south africa , yet I have more knowledge and passion that you can ever dream of having.

    • Amlan Majumdar

Can kindly point out the line where I have compared Song with Gilberto Silva or Flamini? I never said something like that – all I said is Arsenal needs someone like Silva and Flamini – I never said Song is like Gilberto Silva or Flamini.

    • Amlan Majumdar

Also – this article is not about whether Song deserves a first team place or not – it is about how he would be better of being used in a more advanced role rather than as the defensive midfielder. He is NOT the defensive midfielder Arsenal needs. Please read the article.

      Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

Lance Peters, you are bullshit. Song is our best creative outlet in the centre of the park. He can get better defensively, but until his midfield partners start generating more goalscoring chances, we can’t take him out of the lineup. The weakest links in our defence this season were Vermaelen and Sczeszny, but no one wants to admit it because everyone loves them.

“I live in south africa , yet I have more knowledge and passion that you can ever dream of having.”

      Congratulations, you want a medal?

I completely agree with your points, and I hope M’Vila (or another quality DM) is signed soon. Nice piece.

    • Amlan Majumdar

Thank you. Glad you liked it.

dis lance guy must be very foolish, i tink he’s reading sometin else definitely not amlah’s article.

lance peters is a joke. The point of what Alex Song is doing is to show that our midfield is built on fluidity. There is a reason Mikel Arteta was put on the role he was, so Alex Song can get forward and Back. If we set up a rigid midfield, we become far too predictable, and turn into a Chelsea like team. Everyone is putting the blame on him, but does no one realize that this was the managers order? In the last game of the season we had le Coq hold up the midfield while Song was put much Higher up the pitch. The biggest problem with Arsenal fans is that they are labeling players in positions. I predict the point of buying Yann’Mvilla is to find a replacement for the aging Mikel Arteta.

Well done, Amlan! lance must a be Spurs fan. Dude cannot read and/or understand an article with so many positive points. Song will start for us even after we buy M’Vila, but he needs someone to help cover him while he moves up to help our attack. This was point of Amlan. I, like all true gooners, cannot wait for us to add M’Vila to our team.

  • P Nath

another well written article Amlan. a huge fan our writing since the tactical evolution series. don’t be bothered by gits like lance. my only question is what does M’vila’s arrival do to some of the academy and reserve potentials?

    • Amlan Majumdar

Thank you sir. Will come up with an article on that as well :)

    • bobby

Well coquelin is a very versatile and has been kept because of dat reason. His role will be of a valuable back up. Guys like frimpong and other cdm will probably sold. Remember arsenal lives off selling young players. The bulk of it being da players who are not of arsenals top caliber quality. But to maintain the top notch players we need to sell some players. Either way with m’villa we get a 21 year old, who will pbly stay on for a while, and he has time to grow even more. So its a great investment

  • gfan

song ability to attack is good for arsenal cuz we play with def mid .if we have two def mid siting back the fromation will become rigid ..song fits in to the fluid attacking play of arsenal except he needs to curb his rampaging runs nd focus more on his lob passes that made him stand out in the arsenal higlights last year…m’vila is needed cuz we dont have a back up for song nd arteta doesnt provide the clean tackling that he can provide…if song improves he will keep his first team spot if not m’vila will take ti ..thats just good competition nd allows wenger to rotate

  • http://www.dailyprofitshares.com antoine

What a great, well-balanced article! Amlan obviously studied the strengths and weaknesses of the Arsenal setup and the role Song played it. Sad that Lance disgraced South Africa by being a jerk. Amlan, I can’t wait for more. What’s your opinion on Wenger as a manager? It’s been 8 years man!

    • Amlan Majumdar

Thank you sir. I am humbled. Wenger – well this season should be it for him. I think he might himself leave the club if he doesn’t win something.

I love ur article…song has discovered the attacker in him and so wenger needs a total defensive midfielder s, someone like makelele and to me that is M.Vila but until we get him let us celebrate the imminient arrival of Oliver Giroud.

  • Arsene

Song is our best midfielder excluding maybe Wilshere on top form. I have been saying for a while now that we need M’Vila, he will anchor the defence, then Song will play the Wilshere role from 2010/11 season, with Wilshere himself taking the Cesc role from 2010/11. Think of the team that played Barca a few years ago Song as anchor Wilshere sits just ahead and Cesc sits behind RVP. If everyone moves up a bit then M’Vila can hold it all.

  • chuba

great piece. spot on tactical scrutiny. well done.

    • Amlan Majumdar

      Thank you :)

  • Aneft E Budhai

    Amlan,
I noticed that you mentioned switching formation to 4-3-1-2, but I believe that the more appropriate switch would be 4-1-3-2, with M’Vila in front of the defence. This formation would morph into 4-1-2-1-2 with van Persie (if he stays) playing behind the two strikers, Poldi on the left and Giroud mor forward and central forming a fluid attacking front three!
This formation would allow Arsene to mix and match personnel when he has to.
Great piece detailing Song’s positional and tactical deficiencies.

    • Amlan Majumdar

Thanks a lot. Yes, I did mention 4-3-1-2 (similar to Milan), but I also said it is unlikely. :) Specially given the wide-men Arsenal have brought.
